wet spot and tasting it, he asked, "A bottle of wine?"
His employees replied, "No."
Again, he touched his finger to the box and tasted the liquid. "A bottle
of scotch?"

Games for your party
Balloon Popping Contest
Divide guests into two
equal groups. About 5 metres away, place two bags of inflated balloons in
colours to match your theme colours. These balloons should be overinflated to
make popping easier. At the sound of a ringing bell or whistle, the first two
relay contestants, one from each team, run to the bag and remove one balloon.
Each must sit on it until it pops. Once the balloon pops, the player runs back
to the starting line, and tags the next player in line. The first team to
complete the course wins. Not a quiet game…but a guaranteed favourite! This one
may sound like it is just for kids, but your party will live on in your guests'
memories forever if you play this game!
Limbo
The young and the young
at heart always enjoy the classic beach game of "limbo". Try using a string of
twinkle lights, a strand of sparkly garland, a bamboo pole, a flashlight (lights
out), or any item to match your theme for your limbo stick. For a fun variation
on the game, make it a little more challenging by adding a "Super Stomach" to
guests as they take their turn. Have a couple of oversized shirts, and some
fluffy pillows on hand. Get ready for some howling laughter!
Hula Hoopla
Hula hooping isn't just
for kids or 50's Sock Hops…but it will make grown-ups feel young again! Purchase
or borrow a couple of hula-hoops. They are available at discount chains for
about $3.99 each. Let guests know that at a specified time there will be a
"hula" contest, and encourage them to practice during the party if the mood
strikes.
Name That Tune
You'll need a CD player
and some compact discs with compilations of songs related to your theme (Luau,
50's, retro) or just some good favourites of an era appropriate for your party
guests. Play the first few bars, and see which guest can name that tune the
fastest. Keep track of points and award the winner a music CD. If your group is
large, play a variation on this game. Using famous songs, list song titles on
one side of a page, and the original Artists or songwriters on the other side.
Make enough copies for all guests. Challenge guests to match as many as
possible. A challenging but fun adventure!
Pass the Package
Use two props related to
your party theme, or wrap two boxes to look like beautiful gifts (approximately
shoe box size). Divide guests into two teams and have them form two lines. At
the signal to "go", the prop is to be passed from person to person. The catch is
that guests can use any part of their bodies except their hands. If the gift
touches the ground at any time, it must go back to the beginning of the line
again. Whichever team manages to get the prop to the end of the line first wins
the game. You may want to fill each box with little prizes or candy (enough for
all), so that both teams can open the gift and be rewarded for their efforts. We
have several very inexpensive prizes in our Party Favor Store. Giggling good
grown-up fun!
As an alternative, provide one plastic spoon for each player. Divide guests into
two teams, and have them form two lines. Have each player put the spoon handle
into his/her mouth. To begin the game, put one piece of candy into the spoon of
the first person in each line. Players have to pass the candy down the line –
without using their hands! If the candy falls, it goes back to the start of the
line. The team that gets the candy to the end of the line first wins!
To Speak or Not to Speak?
Give each player a bag or
goodie box with 10 small treasures in it (candy, chocolates, little favours).
Have bags labelled with players' names, so they don't get mixed up. Let players
know at the start of the game exactly when the game will be ending—this game can
be played throughout an entire party if you so choose. The object of the game is
to catch fellow players saying one of the forbidden words or phrases:
Choose 5 or 6 words or phrases related to the theme of your party.
For example, for a New Year's party, you might select: MILLENNIUM, NEW YEAR,
TWELVE, CENTURY, TIMES SQUARE
For a luau, you might select: PALM TREE, LEI, COCONUT, BEACH, TROPICAL
For a Retro Party, you might select: GROOVY, DISCO, FAR OUT, SMILEY FACE, PEACE,
YEAH BABY
For a Wedding Shower, you might select: BRIDE, GROOM, GIFTS, HONEYMOON,
RECEPTION
(Select words or phrases that would be natural for guests to say considering the
occasion.)
To help players, post the words prominently on a board where they can be seen
often. If someone is caught saying one of the words on the list, that person has
to give up a treasure from their stash. The player with the biggest haul of
goodies at the end of the game is the winner! Lots of fun!
Trivia to Fit Any Theme Party
Trivia games are fun for
everyone, especially if they are tied to the theme of your party. If you are
having a sit down dinner, roll up various trivia quizzes, and tie with ribbon to
match your theme colours. Set the little bundles at each place setting. If you
are serving food buffet style, put them in a decorative basket. We have provided
a few ideas to build a trivia quiz around, or you can come up with other
creative ideas. Think of the interests of your crowd before choosing a topic.
Try to include trivia related to the topic for a wide range of knowledge levels,
so no one will feel left out. Let guests know when the answers will be read.
Make the trivia quiz challenging, and your guests will leave the party a little
wiser than they were when they arrived:
Sports – who holds what record in what sport, or match famous
Sports figures with the correct sport. Ask a sports fanatic to help you pull
this together!
Inventors and Explorers – Provide a list, and have guests try to match inventors
and explorers with their invention or discovery. Much more difficult than you
might think!
Music – Either have guests try to match Artists with Song Titles, match Song
Titles with the year the song was a hit, or match Songs with the decade they
were from. Spend 45 minutes at a music store with a pad of paper, looking at the
backs of compilation and "best of" CD's, and you'll have enough music trivia to
fill the year 2000!
Movie stars/Movies – Provide a list, and have guests match as many
actors/actresses with the films they starred in, or have them try to match movie
titles with the year the movie was released. Another fun "Hollywood" trivia game
is to see who can name the most films that have won an Academy Award for "Best
Picture".
Make a list of the 100 most influential/important people of the 20th century.
Ask guests to decide what significant contribution each made in order to make
the list. The prize goes to the person who has all 100 or closest to it!
A great prize to award the winner of any of these trivia games would be a trivia
game, such as Trivial Pursuit™, a subscription to a news periodical, or a coffee
table book chronicling the 20th century.
